Water: Two Poems of W.S. Merwin, High Voice and Chamber Ensemble

The second song of two for this ensemble. This work will appear later in 2008 on the ERMMedia label scored for soprano and orchestra.

Clayton Run-Around , solo violin

My second solo violin work, exploring both Norwegian Hardanger and Cape Breton fidding styles in a "classical" context .

Performance: ACA Festival, June 2007, New York: Minghuan Xu, violin

Hardanger, solo violin

Two short sections from this piece -- an evocation of Hardanger fiddle playing rather than a study in it.

Performance: BU College of Fine Arts, December 2005: Maia Travers, violin

Wind Quartet in One Movement (Double Fugue)

This is a 3.5-minute section from the fourth part of my wind quartet. This piece uses the latest in "21st-Century Baroque" contrapuntal techniques.

Performance: BU College of Fine Arts, April 2005

Three pieces fromTombeau de Honegger for solo piano

These sections from the three pieces are also studies in "21st-Century Baroque" contrapuntal techniques.

Falls from Ongiara

One minute section from this work-in-progress for chorus and orchestra.

Reading: Boston University Symphony Orchestra, April 2005

Toccata, Piano

This is a 40-second section from my Toccata. Virtuoso piano writing reminds of Barber and Prokofiev.

Performance: 1993 Maine Composers' Forum concert, Kennebunkport, ME: Hugh Hinton, piano

Arkadia, Orchestra

Two-minute section. 2001 Commission of the Arcady Music Festival.

Performance August 2001, Arcady Chamber Orchestra, Arkadi Steinlucht, cond

Gloria, from Mass Cap-à-Pie

This is a one minute section from a Mass written for both concert and liturgical use that has been performed successfully in both forms. It has simple melodies yet rich harmonies.

Performance: 1994 MCF concert, Blue Hill, ME: Bagaduce Chorale, Mary Cheyney Gould, Organ

Fugue, Piano

This is a one minute section from my Fugue, companion to the Toccata. This is a valued performance that was rescued from an analog master tape; thus the irregularities in sound. However, I felt it worthy of the site.

Performance: 1994 SCI Festival, Bates College, Lewiston, ME: Gregory Hall, Piano

Interlude II, chamber ensemble

A section of this work for winds and strings. Second movement of a song cycle for six instruments and voice.

Performance: 1997 Gamper Festival, Brunswick, ME: Jeff Milarsky, conductor

Duo, Clarinet and Bassoon

The final movement of this work. Poulenc/Ravel influence.

Performance: 1986, Curtis Institute , Curtis Hall

Foreboding, High Voice and Piano

A section from this work. Set to a poem by Celia Thaxter. Late Ravel influence.

Performance: 1993 MCF concert, Kennebunkport, ME: Bruce Fithian, Tenor; John MacDonald, Piano

A la Maniere de..., Piano

An hommage to French composers Francis Poulenc, Jacques Ibert, Jean Rivier, and Olivier Messiaen.

Performance: Gregory Hall, Piano

Interlude I, Orchestra

A section from this brief orchestral work, performed by the Curtis Institute Symphony Orchestra, Barbara Yahr, conducting. Lots of "pretty"chords.  My teacher Ned Rorem described this work as "winsome" in his book The Nantucket Diaries.
